Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my blog of plants! You'll find a list of herbaceous plants that I've encountered and learned about during my studies at Virginia Tech, in the order I learned them by list. You'll find great photos of herbaceous plants, their names and families, and details of where I found them. All photos have been taken by myself. Feel free to click on them for enlargement. May this blog be of benefit to thee!

Solidago rugosa 'Fireworks' Rough Goldenrod, Asteraceae

Genus and species: Solidago rugosa
Cultivar: 'Fireworks'
Common Name: Rough Goldenrod
Family: Asteraceae

This is a summer perennial native to North America. It roots from rhizomes making weeds less of an issue. The plant grows in vigorous clumps with very strong stems, providing a lovely golden swooping look to them at 4' tall, unlike the straight species that grows 6' tall! The flowers are only stamens--no petals! It would also be good to note that it doesn't cause allergies! Unlike ragweed (via wind-pollinatoin) this plant is pollinated by insects. Yahoo! :D

Photos taken August 24 and September 21, 2011 at Virginia Tech in the Hahn Horticulture Gardens
